Some projects are winding down while others are in their initial stages. This allows for a bit of free time for things like billing, taxes, and upgrading the Basecamp account.
Last summer, when launching Airbag Industries, LLC, I grabbed an account, tweaked a few things and started running without putting in any effort into sprucing up the virtual space.
No harm, no foul, but there is no need to get sloppy with your image, especially with applications that are used to interact directly with clients, the people who pay you money for making them look good.
Over the weekend, after winding up new projects, I realized that out of the box Basecamp is a little bland to the naked eye. So with a little Photoshopery I came up with a small badge and color scheme that makes the project management software look just a tad bit better, much like how the right tie (and by the right tie I mean the right hand-woven Robert Talbott) can make an ordinary suit pop.
After surveying the results I got to thinking, surely I'm not the only one to spiff up their Basecamp.

You're certainly not alone Greg. I did the same last year when I decided to start using Basecamp full-time to manage projects.
I wish there were a few more customisation options in Basecamp. I can understand why they *don't* go down that route - they've got a business image to protect as well - but still.
Scott, post what you came up with, I'm curious. Use the
tag and make the image no wider than 400px please. Its at this point in the story when our hero tries to find why HTML is not appearing in the comments. Dammit Cameron why are you not on at this hour as you are a pro at this kind of thing.
No screenshot, huh?
I remember how much time I took when I tried to come up with the right logo for my Blinksale account. (And nice job of getting away with a two word title.) ;p
I think they already have an API (or will be realeasing one quite soon), with that you can package Basecamp in just about any way imaginable.
Not that I'm saying you would want to do that, but at least it is possible :)
What about encoding html? Lets see... <html> -or- <html&> Remove this rubbish once you see it.
Tomas, I'm trying to enable the IMG tag but it's not working... damn you Movable Type spam assasin ninja code!
Greg - post your comment, and then edit the comment in the MT comment screen. Anything you add there will not get stripped out - this is a great way to add images to your comments but not turn then on globally.
Spam assassin ninja is no match for my MT-fu!
Ah, there we go. Game on.
I use Basecamp (the free version) to manage our one big project at work, but aside from uploading our logo, haven't really done anything else. Curious to see what you guys have done with it.
Wow, apparently I went to sleep last night and forgot all about this. Sorry, Greg.
Here you go:
Best part of this post... the tie link!... oh... and your Basecamp interface looks cooler too ; )
Scott, no apology necessary. I love how you worked the logo in, looks great! Anyone else?
Ray, yeah it's hard to beat the Talbot site, except of course running your hands through a few of their well crafted ties.
Those ties really are suave. I'm interested in basecamp... I haven't really looked into it a ton but I noticed there's a free version. Does basecamp allow your clients to track progress as well? I looked through the site but didn't notice that it was intended for client use as well.
We need more customizing options here. Its so dull being able to just change the color.
What about changing the font face atleast!!
Greg -
Like your basecamp tweak. Nice.
Curious... How did you get that cool dark blue on light blue halftone pattern out of photoshop?
GB
Not to turn this into a Design 101 thread, but I've always loved the look of your site Greg. Sorry if it's obvious or has been covered before, but I just wanted to know what font you used for the "AIRBAG INDUSTRIES, LLC" in your logo?
It looks like Adobe Jenson to me. I just wanted to get that out there in case I'm right, I feel pretty suave when I know my fonts. Girlfriends don't think it's suave.
Steve,
You are totally right, my fiance more or less thinks I am a dork when I talk about fonts...
Would you mind sharing your color-theme with us?
Thanks
Adobe Jenson is close but it's in fact Adobe Minion MM.
nice upgrade, but a question...
how can you really use the files section of Basecamp with such a low ceiling on the upload limit (20mb now, i think)
i was a die-hard user until two months into it my client wanted to post a 105mb file. and that was my brief affair with basecamp.
{ Andrew }: See the link below for information on how to upload files larger than 10MB to your Basecamp account.

It's somewhat ghetto, but it works.
