Growing up in Alaska there weren't that many opportunities to root for the home team. Sure we had amateur sports but the only thing that made national television was the Iditarod.
And nobody wears t-shirts or decorates their vehicles for their favorite dog musher.
So now that I am ten miles from Disneyland just having a major league home team is a new experience, let alone a team that is the MLB American League Champions and soon to be World Series Champion, Anaheim Angels.
Last week my brother (now living near Oakland) gave me a hard time because I was getting excited over the Angels and baseball in general. He asked me when did I start liking baseball?
I didn’t have a good answer for him then, but I do now.
I started liking baseball when the Angel’s made it to the World Series and his Oakland A’s didn’t.

Also growing up in Alaska I never gave baseball a second glance. It was only played by college guys in the summer and that was just a small version Bull Durham. So really not much to watch. But livign in the Bay area I am able to have to teams to cheer for. I would have rather seen the A's going to the World Series, (which they would have beat the Angles to get there) but that is not an option. So I glad to see that Giants have made it to Baseball's "Big Show" But I still have to laugh at the fact that you are now a HUGE fan of the Angels. "I have gone to three of their games" does not mean that you are a life long fan. You are just jumping on the Band wagon. But if you want to have the dream of being an Angels fan then you can go ahead and have that dream. You should then also dream that they beat the Giants, because that is all it will be is a dream. GO GIANTS!!!
I was an Angels fan when I was a boy because I spent two years in Orange County during my formative baseball years. After being in Northern California permanently, I switched my loyalties to the Giants, but never lost my affection for the hapless and long-suffering 'Gels. I was in McCovey Cove last night as the (also long-suffering) Giants to the N.L. crown. I am rooting for the Giants, but if they have to lose the series to anyone, I'm glad its the Angels.
Baseball? You're kidding, right? You would deny your heritage.....an Alaskan.. your passion is not the Mighty Ducks? What the Puck!
I've had a hard time following the Ducks. In my mind they pale in comparison to the 1989 Palmer High School vartisty squad (who took the state championship from Service High that year) and the UAA Seawolves from 1991-1997.
And I keep forgetting that they play hockey just down the road. Maybe it's the complete lack of cold weather and snow that normally tells the brain, "hey it's hockey season!"
