Is it me, or does the voice translating the French Minister of Foreign Affairs sound like it's coming from a computer? I'm trying to think where I've heard this voice before the movie Aliens, I think?

I do love the fact that they have the guts to stand on principle, and to embrace the point of view that the nations of the world have as much responsibility to protect nation states from super-power bullying as they do from rogue state irrationality. A cogent excerpt:
"The United Nations is the guardian of an ideal, a conscience. No one can assert today that the path or war will be shorter than the path of inspections. No one can claim it will lead to a safer, more just, more stable world. For war is always the sanction of failure. Would this be our sole recourse in the face of the many challenges of this time?"
The council chamber echoed with applause following these remarks, an acclaim that started in the galleries and moved through the foreign ministers sitting around the horseshow table, prompting Joschka Fischer to gavel the panel to order. Love those Frenchies.
It cracks me up that everyone is applauding the French. These are the same people that welcomed Hitler into their own country and gave him a fat cigar for being such a good little dictator.
The French are the ones who attacked Greenpeace, killing members of the group and sinking their ship. Now they are the champion of the peace movement along with their on-again, off-again, boyfriend Germany.
* Just for the record, France didn't "welcome" the Third Reich any more than Poland, Belgium, or Czechoslovakia. The actions of the puppet, post-occupation Vichy government earns the French the worst of their reputation. If you're looking for legitmate governments who were truly Nazi-friendly though what relevance that has to current debate is another question much better examples are Franco's Spain and Mussolini's Italy (we'll leave Imperial Japan out of the discussion to stay Euro-focused). Coincidentally, the current "center-right" governments in Spain and Italy, now supporting the U.S. position in the UN, are perhaps most susseptible to internal, electoral downfall due to these positions, and the lack of alignment with the population who elected them. I wonder if the Bush team calculated the rise of "left-center" governments all across Europe as another price to pay for their hamfisted foreign policy tactics.
I'm just gunning for that Amazon gift certificate. ;) And despite your politics and taste in European countries, I enjoy this site very much. Perhaps it's an inspiration to launch a blog, if so, thanks in advance.
A blog of my own I now have. About a day of setup and recruitment of editor friends. Thanks for the inspiration Greg, and for proving how satifying a simple layouts can be. I wish I had nothing scheduled today tho ... now it's time to get stuff done and it's 9:15P.
Well, we'll try to elevate things above standard-level Bush bashing, but there are 5 editors, with equal rights. I think you'll find things most of the entries more about provoking questions than providing answers. Oh, and few people doubt the complex associations between the nation states involved here. Things are rarely as simple as the mainstream media would have you believe.

Just remember who screwed up the Winter Olympic Figure Skating Finals. The French!
Godwin's Law, in only 5 posts.
Godwin's Law may apply to most threads but not when the discussion involves France and/or Disneyland Paris.

Oh no, that's what the Net needs now... more Bush-bashing bloggers.
Speaking of the French, I did a little research today and found Chirac's relationship with Hussein a bit more than suspect.
